Truly Us
Why Jesus—Not Feminism or Biblical Patriarchy—Is Our Only Framework for Truly Understanding Gender
Writing • ACADEMIC RESEARCH • BOOK DESIGN
I wrote a book! (Sort of…) I wrote a thesis to conclude my Master’s of Theology on Mission from Northern Seminary. A lot of people asked to read it, so I decided to design a beautiful PDF instead of sending over the official Times New Roman Word Doc.
You’ll want to check it out if you have ever wondered what it means to be a man or a woman and why it matters. Chapter 1 introduces the triumphs and tragedies of the past one hundred years of feminisms. Chapter 2 confronts the Evangelical reaction dubbed “biblical patriarchy.” In chapter 3, I get into Genesis, Jesus, and Paul, establishing a framework for understanding gender (and humanity in the image of God) across time and culture. And at the end, of course, I suggest some conclusions and give examples of how the world might look if we stepped in to this vision of humanity.
Branding
PrayerWorks
24/7 Prayer Room in Fort Wayne, IN
naming • logo • SIGNAGE
When my friend / pastor / boss felt like God gave him a vision for a 24/7 prayer room in the upcoming downtown development—dubbed Electric Works—I could see that God was up to something incredible. One day I threw out the name “PrayerWorks” in a meeting half-joking and just three days later while I was praying, I felt like I had a picture of what the logo could look like. I submitted a presentation to the planning committee three days after that (without them asking for it!), and the rest is history. A few small updates were made after the initial draft, like incorporating the parent organization’s colors in the gradient of the Fort Wayne flag icon and an additional layout from a designer friend, but overall, it stayed pretty close to the original vision. During the development of the project, I also got to contribute designs for some of the signage, including the outdoor backlit sign and the four primary verses on the interior wall. If you haven’t visited PrayerWorks, it is such a blessing to encounter God in this dedicated space!
Branding
Sunbound Books
Fort Wayne Bookseller
naming • logo • SIGNAGE
About a year and a half prior to the opening of Sunbound Books, I was interviewing my friend Liz about her experiences as a woman in business for my thesis, Truly Us. Today, she has her own local bookstore dedicated to women’s stories and women authors. The branding she needed had to be bright and positive and inviting, while also leaning a little sassy. The “sunburst” logo mark doubles as an asterisk in various design applications, inviting the “reader” to discover more. And this lovely font used as the base for the wordmark has a higher contrast (thicker and thinner lines in the letters), almost giving off a serif-like appearance (like typefaces in a book!), yet is confident as a contemporary, elegant sans serif. I also combined the “u” and “n” to add an extra ray of personality.
Branding
Radical Coffee Co.
Unlaunched Local Coffee Shop
Logo • Brand design system • Marketing pitch
A friend approached me with a vision for a local coffee shop that would provide a place for the community to connect while making a difference in the lives of coffee farmers in other parts of the world. A place like this—though not a completely uncharted enterprise—would be a totally unique contribution to our community. Working with the client’s dream, I created a logo, a brand design system, icons to capture the vision, and a pitch deck for investors. Due to personal reasons, after partnering with an initial investor, the coffee shop dream was put on indefinite pause.
Campaign
For the Sake of Others
Church Stewardship Campaign
branding & Design • Communication strategy • video
Our church had a remarkable sense that God called us to partner with him in two endeavors: to plant a church in Haiti (in partnership with a sustainable discipleship and entrepreneurship school one of our leaders pioneered) and build a family training center in the lowest-resourced part of our city… at the same time. This would become our stewardship campaign called, “For the Sake of Others.” In the first eighteen months, God moved in ways we could not have even imagined, despite a challenging economic climate.
As a campus pastor, I helped lead our congregation through the campaign launch, including teaching through the series. As the Communication Director, I contributed to, led a team, or directly created every piece of marketing and communication for the campaign. That includes naming, branding and design, print collateral and banners, email campaigns, a website landing page, social media strategy, a daily digital prayer guide, and leading a team to produce three campaign launch films. For the brand direction, we incorporated a bright yellow to express good news and help it to stand out in people’s minds, and we developed a dot motif used throughout to show how all of us come together to contribute to the whole. We did all of this in less than two months (including a trip to Haiti) while maintaining a Sabbath rhythm.
Video Course
CLARITY
Discover How to Recognize God's Voice & More Confidently Step Out in Faith
Online Video Course • Marketing Funnel • Email Campaign
From 2016 to 2020, our church hosted a 9-month young adult discipleship intensive called FORM. In January of 2020, I initiated an entire rebrand and relaunch, including updated color palette and fonts, an all-new website, and new ways for people to experience the content before applying. This became the online video course known as CLARITY. Not only did this give people the opportunity to engage with one of the foundational tools for FORM, but it was tied to a targeted marketing funnel—including email automations, online quizzes, and extra downloads—to help with recruiting. (Unfortunately, COVID killed FORM, and with it, our entire updated strategy.)
In this 4-part course, I train participants in identifying when God might be speaking, processing that experience internally, discerning with others and with Scripture, and stepping out in faith to see God work in their life. (Check out the course below, reposted on our church’s app and website.)
